“Markel The Magnificent: Who is Out There?” by Elisabeth Schalij is a Source of Timeless Lessons for Young Readers

Everyone, including writers, is inspired by something or someone to create their craft. To pursue a career in art, artist and author Elisabeth Schalij moved from the Netherlands to New York City. Living in the Big Apple welcomed an opportunity for her to help create children’s shows that will introduce schoolchildren to the history and culture of Native Americans. The experience became an impetus for her to write her first children’s book “Snowbear.”

Inspiration indeed exists everywhere, even under the most unexpected circumstances. Soon, Elisabeth got inspired to grab her pen and write “Markel the Magnificent: Who is Out There?” The book is about Elisabeth’s reclusive elderly neighbor who moved to Texas. It details various situations that boost the man’s lonely soul. It includes meeting the younger generations, including the author’s friend, “the young dragon.”

Spending time with new acquaintances enabled the man to travel and explore the beauty of Europe. It also helped him to build joyful connections with the staff and residents of a nursing home, where he eventually spent the rest of his life until the day he passed away.

“Markel the Magnificent” contains timeless lessons that will teach its young readers valuable lessons, including the importance of building lasting friendships. The book is also replete with beautifully-made illustrations that will delight children. Elisabeth Schalij’s book is a perfect supplement to a great bedtime ritual.

When Elisabeth Schalij moved from the Netherlands to New York City to pursue an art career, she helped create children’s shows to introduce schoolchildren to the history and culture of Native Americans. This became the impetus for writing her first children’s book Snowbear. Elisabeth now lives in the Dallas area, where she, as an accomplished visual artist, has exhibited her work at events and juried shows--winning numerous awards.
