The Musée du Louvre and Paris+ par Art Basel announce a collaboration in the Tuileries Garden in the heart of Paris.

For the 2023 edition of their joint initiative, the Musée du Louvre and Paris+ par Art Basel have invited Annabelle Ténèze, presently Director of Les Abattoirs, Musée - Frac Occitanie Toulouse and incoming Director of the Louvre-Lens Museum, to curate an exhibition for public audiences in the Tuileries Garden, this time bringing together contemporary works by more than 20 international artists.

In dialogue with the historic setting of the Tuileries Garden – at once a natural landscape, popular attraction, and civil meeting space in the heart of Paris – Ténèze’s 2022 exhibition ’La Suite de l’histoire’ already interrogated new artistic practice in the public realm, proposing alternative monuments. This year’s exhibition pursues the question of visibilities in the common space and asks visitors anew: What are the different ways to live within and inhabit the Garden? Who and what else shares this space, which harbors aquatic, vegetal, and mineral life?

Against the background of climate change – between ecological necessity and cultural preservation, in an urban environment where the effects of global warming are exacerbated – nearly 20 artists will present works conceived as “living objects.” They call attention to our senses to the movements of the Garden and its protagonists: animals, humans, and plant life. Together, they bring to the fore the vital forces lurking in the cracks – between rock and stone, in the roots, and within the ponds, and behind the beat of the city – re-establishing the link with the living. The exhibition spotlights our interdependencies and the network of forces that comprise these coexistences and cohabitations, to imagine how we might live, and write, together in the “course of history,” as the title of Ténèze’s 2022 exhibition suggests.

For the second consecutive year, the collaborative effort between the Musée du Louvre and Paris+ par Art Basel have resulted in an exhibition – titled ’La cinquième saison’ (’The fifth season’) – conceived especially for the Tuileries Garden, organized by a curator selected together by both partners. In 2024, the Tuileries Garden will be a focal point of the Olympic and Paralympic Games taking place in Paris. For the 2025 and 2026 editions of the program, the Musée du Louvre and Paris+ par Art Basel have chosen independent curator and art critic Mouna Mekouar to curate an exhibition of works in the heart of the Garden.
