The most notable adaptation was a radio broadcast written by Howard Koch and performed by Orson Welles and The Mercury Theatre on Halloween Eve in 1938 that simulated the alien invasion from the perspective of a special-report newscast. The broadcast was so realistic in its breaking-news format that it caused actual panic in many of those who tuned in not knowing it was a dramatization. Some listeners even fled their homes or covered their bodies to protect themselves from the Martian gas raid. Since this historic broadcast, “War of the Worlds” has been dramatized and updated for many different eras, including a 1970s musical concept album and a recent adaptation that covers the Martian attack from the perspective of National Public Radio.
