Kuraray Co., Ltd. (Head Office: Chiyoda-ku, Tokyo; President: Hitoshi Kawahara) will exhibit at the Materials Show, a major trade show to be held in Boston, Massachusetts on July 27 and 28, 2023 and in Portland, Oregon on August 2 and 3, 2023. This event is aimed at connecting material suppliers with apparel and sports brands. Kuraray will be exhibiting its environmentally friendly and highly functional materials for apparel and sporting goods based on the concept of a “Sustainable future with Kuraray.” These materials include cellulose acetate fiber with marine biodegradability (under development) and MAGIC TAPE™ hook-and-loop fastener composed of recycled materials.

1.Main Exhibit Content

Cellulose acetate fiber (under development)

A solvent-free marine biodegradable acetate fiber created utilizing our proprietary melt-spinning method. GHG emissions during manufacturing are reduced compared to typical manufacturing methods that use organic solvents, which helps lessen the impact on the environment. Making it cross sectional (for example, cruciform cross section) to suit the application enhances functionality. By combining composite spinning with different resins, new functions can be created.

Syndiotactic polystyrene (SPS) fiber

A fiber that dries approximately 1.8 times more quickly than polyester according to internal tests. The processing agent’s negative effects on the environment are lessened thanks to it no longer being required to add a water-repellent treatment. Due to characteristics like a quick drying time and an excellent texture when dry, the fiber is suitable for sportswear, innerwear and more.

Recycled type of MAGIC TAPE™ hook-and-loop fastener

A hook-and-loop fastener made of 100% polyester, approximately 30% of which is polyester yarn made from used plastic bottles. No back coating agent is used, allowing for material recycling and a 30% reduction in CO₂ emissions during production (compared to our company’s other products). This fastener is being used more frequently for outerwear and other applications, and it has been favorably embraced in ecologically minded outdoor, sports, and uniform sectors.

Other items to be displayed include shock-absorbing fiber, anti-slip fiber, SEPTON™ Q-series hydrogenated styrenic thermoplastic elastomer, GENESTAR™ heat-resistant polyamide resin, EARNESTON™ thermoplastic elastomer compound, MAGIC TAPE™ mesh type and phenoxy nonwoven (under development).
