Catch Jocelyn Turner’s revealing book about today’s schools on display at the 2023 San Diego Union-Tribune Festival of Books.

The education policy, assessment and reform book “Fighting the White Knight: Saving Education from Misguided Testing, Inappropriate Standards, and Other Good Intentions” by Jocelyn Turner will be exhibited by self-publishing and book marketing company ReadersMagnet at the 2023 San Diego Union-Tribune Festival of Books. The book festival will be presented by the University of San Diego at 5998 Alcala Park, San Diego, CA, on August 19, 2023.

In “Fighting the White Knight,” Jocelyn Turner offers a frontline perspective on the current state of education, shedding light on the detrimental effects of government mandates and flawed standards.

Turner initially set out to inspire her middle-school and high-school students with a love for learning. However, she soon discovered that the system meant to support education was stifling it at every turn.

Turner fearlessly shares her teaching experiences, providing readers with a first-hand account of how government-mandated standards and relentless rounds of routinely inappropriate testing are failing and demoralizing students across America.

She reveals the stark reality that strategies devised to bridge the achievement gap often perversely widen the gap, leaving countless students increasingly lost. In her final year of teaching, Turner was forced to sacrifice over one-fifth of her instructional hours to meet testing demands.

These nonstop assessments were based on curriculum goals that could only be achieved with days or even weeks of remedial education – remediation essentially unavailable to her students. The time required to fill in past learning gaps kept being crowded out by other agendas. Disillusioned by this broken system, Turner wrote “Fighting the White Knight” to expose deep-rooted flaws in today’s by-the-numbers system and to advocate for overdue changes.

This groundbreaking book challenges conventional wisdom and calls for reevaluating the American educational system. Turner presents compelling examples, illustrating how pie-in-the-sky standards and tests, combined with inflexible instruction, hinder the progress they aim to promote.

With unwavering determination, she navigates the complexities of the educational landscape, addressing the issues head-on and providing a clear path forward.

Jocelyn Turner was a teacher of Spanish, and bilingual English, social studies, science and mathematics. She retired from Neal Math and Science Academy, a middle school with students who are 99% low income, 49% Hispanic, 33% African-American, 11% white, 38% English learners, and 4% homeless. Chronic absenteeism at Neal stands at 48.7%. She has an M.A. in Teaching, Secondary Mathematics (National-Louis University), a Master of Business and Public Management (Rice University), and a B.A. in Political Science (University of Puget Sound). During her ten years of teaching, Ms. Turner served under twelve principals, watched her district’s board be fired and replaced, and survived losing her favorite principal to government grant requirements. Ms. Turner managed to intersect No Child Left Behind, Response to Intervention, Race to the Top, Rising Star, the Common Core, and PARCC. If she had been teaching in the 1300s, Ms. Turner suspects she would have been standing on the docks in Messina just in time to herald the arrival of the Black Death.
