National Street Gazetteer now available at highest level of detail

Intelligent Addressing have announced the availability to Statutory Undertakers of the National Street Gazetteer (NSG) to BS7666 Level 3. For Statutory Undertakers, the organisations involved in street works and highways maintenance, the NSG provides users with access to new street data as it becomes available.

The National Street Gazetteer (NSG) is compiled from over 970,000 street submissions from local authorities and is the only centrally maintained street database that conforms to the British Standard. Associated street information such as details of ownership, width and height restrictions, pedestrian crossings and traffic signals, as well as speed limit information is also being collected and is available to Statutory Undertakers.

“The road and street centreline geometry that comes with Level 3 means that our road transport infrastructure can now be reliably queried and probed to help meet the future challenges to the street network”, says Nick Turner, NSG Custodian. Nick continues “the NSG process is already indispensable to Local Authorities who use the Unique Street Reference Number to link data between applications for Public Service delivery from street light maintenance to safe routes to school. Beyond this the NSG has huge potential for a number of new initiatives not least the tricky question of vehicle tracking and road pricing recently highlighted by the Downing Street petition.”

Intelligent Addressing, on behalf of the Improvement and Development Agency (IDeA), are the custodians of the NSG. Working with Local Government Highways Authorities and other organisations with highways responsibilities, including Transport for London, the Highways Agency and Network Rail, they operate the national hub. This centralised server collates and validates Local Street Gazetteer (LSG) information from source and provides a facility to make this information available to organisations carrying out street works, such as public utilities.

All 172 Highways Authorities in England and Wales are now making regular updates to the NSG. Since taking over of the custodianship of the NSG in 2006, Intelligent Addressing has presided over wholesale improvements in the quality and detail of the data being submitted by introducing quality management processes and best practice guidelines to ensure continuous and ongoing improvements to the dataset.

Intelligent Addressing is a specialist private sector consultancy employing recognised experts in addressing. It was originally set up to help develop the National Land and Property Gazetteer (NLPG) on behalf of local government and now manages the NLPG and NSG central data hubs under the terms of the Mapping Services Agreement (MSA) with local government.

National Street Gazetteer: Required under the New Roads and Street Works Act, the National Street Gazetteer (NSG) is a comprehensive list of over 1 million named and un-named streets, footpaths and thoroughfares, the definitive source for anyone with an interest in streets and their usage. There are over 300 organisations, utilities such as gas, water and electricity, BT, plus cable and communications companies, named as ’Statutory Undertakers’ approved by the Department of Transport to download this data, which conforms to the BS7666:1-2000 Standard.
