Freya Smallwood’s “The Raptor’s Grasp” commences with the US economy in meltdown. After the violent death of a guest at a “Black Saturday” cliffside celebration, a party server and Dr. Bradley, both immersed in their separate grief, assist police and reengage with life. Bradley finds Abelove’s best witness, a young scientist brain-damaged by drowning. Soon police learn that the waiter is his father, slightly connected to the victim, and detain him. But then Mexican police retrieve the beached corpse of another guest who was alive before the waiter’s arrest. While Abelove’s interviews with scientists complicate his case with disputes about the survivability of all sea life, in moral horror he grows more convinced that the killer he seeks is someone he cannot in conscience arrest.

Freya Smallwood’s mystery novel highlights psychological complexity through brilliant characterization, captivating dialogue, and a richly developed plot. It is a gripping novel that will excite fans of multi-faceted books and detective stories.
