New York Launches Adult Lead Poisoning Awareness Campaign and Resources to Protect Workers and Building Occupants

Lead poisoning is considered to be an entirely preventable environmental disease, but even with this knowledge, there are a number of occupations and indoor environments that still expose people to lead hazards.

Last month, the New York State Department of Health announced it was launching the “Don’t Bring Lead Home” public health awareness campaign. The month-long effort was designed to educate the public about the dangers of lead exposure for adults.

The campaign highlighted ways that adults can be exposed to lead on the job, how lead can be transported home, and tips to prevent exposure. A separate campaign focused on childhood lead poisoning prevention took place in the latter part of the month.

According to the New York State Department of Health:
Adults can be exposed to lead dust or lead fumes during renovation or remodeling activities in older homes with lead-based paints. They can also be exposed through certain jobs and hobbies. Lead dust can be brought into the home on work clothes, shoes, and equipment. Lead dust can get in cars, and on furniture, floors, and carpets. This is called “take-home lead,” and is harmful to anyone who comes in contact with it.

“Lead poisoning is considered to be an entirely preventable environmental disease, but even with this knowledge, there are a number of occupations and indoor environments that still expose people to lead hazards,” said Frank Selamie, President of CTSI. “Identifying sources of lead is key to preventing new cases of lead poisoning. The industrial hygiene and building science professionals at CTSI help to achieve this. We have successfully performed thousands of lead and lead-based paint-related projects with our expert team comprised of EPA lead certified risk assessors and inspectors. CTSI conducts lead-based paint sampling and testing to comply with the NYC Department of Health, U.S. Department of Housing of Urban Development, and EPA guidelines. The end result protects workers, building occupants, and helps businesses and institutions comply with existing health and safety regulations.”
