“Reflections on Mountaineering” is a collection of narrative-style poetry that seeks to convey the Author’s mountaineering experiences and the insights he attained into human nature under duress. While all the poems are “narrative” in that they seek to tell a lucid story with a moral or life-lesson, the poems are presented in a variety of formats: some rhyme, others are in “blank verse” (meter without rhyme), or are “prose-poems,” and some are “hybrid” in format. As a whole, the poems draw upon what the Author learned from his many decades of climbing as his avid avocation, or are drawn from the experiences of his guides, colleagues and peers.

Viewed in their totality, the poems constitute a “meditation” on human nature as perceived in the context of defining the limits of human understanding and achievement. Among the variety of topics addressed are a climber’s reaction to the sensations of awe and fear, the lure of the big mountains, and to the arbitrary and capricious role played by luck, chance and “fate” in determining the outcome of any adventure.

The poetry collection further strives to uncover the “hidden” truths that mountaineers are sometimes said to experience, and contends that many of the same moral dilemmas encountered in “everyday” life are also present in the mountains, only to a sharper degree. Of course, there are also some “truths” that are unique to the mountain environment. The poems also address the human perception of reality in the context of exploring “the meaning of life” itself, and examine how climbers impart human meaning to the inanimate mountains by the very act of climbing them, thereby “creating something out of nothing” -- what the Author contends is the ultimate existentialist act.

“Reflections on Mountaineering” will be exhibited at the ReadersMagnet exhibit at the 2023 Frankfurt Book Fair. The company showcases the works of independent and self-published authors at huge book events, such as the Frankfurt Book Fair, helping them to share their stories with the world and connect with their readers. Fairgoers are invited to the ReadersMagnet exhibit to view the Book’s display.
