The extensive display tells about the romantic Middle Ages and the real-life Middle Ages. The former were popularized through literature and became a fascination and a style of life for the Russian imperial court in the 1820s–40s. The latter were discovered by those who wanted to learn more about the era, and that is a whole story from the second half of the 19th century, when art collectors developed an interest in the Middle Ages.

The exhibition includes more than 380 items from the collections of the State Hermitage: tournament and parade armour, examples of Western European arms, pieces of mediaeval applied art, paintings and graphic works, sculpture, books and manuscripts, stained glass, as well as items of furniture, glassware and pottery, porcelain and tapestries.

Th meeting point for the guided tour groups is reached by way of the Jordan Staircase.

Ticket holders will also be able to independently view the other displays in the Main Museum Complex without buying any other ticket.

The exhibition runs until 22 October 2023.
