The new shared bicycles are perfect for getting to a meeting in another building quickly, getting a sandwich during lunch or continuing your journey from the bus stop.

Employees at Schiphol-East can make free use of new shared bicycles. In collaboration with Hely, Schiphol has started a new bikeshare programme with 150 shared bikes available at five bicycle parking facilities. Schiphol stimulates the use of bicycles as a sustainable and healthy mode of transport and encourages employees to use bikes to cover short distances at the airport.

“The new shared bicycles are perfect for getting to a meeting in another building quickly, getting a sandwich during lunch or continuing your journey from the bus stop. We hope that many employees will make frequent use of the bikes as an alternative to travelling by car. That will contribute to our goal of making transport to, from and at the airport more sustainable.

Director Strategy & Airport Planning at Schiphol

During the launch phase, these Hely shared bicycles can be used for free by employees of companies located at Schiphol-East. Companies can set up a business account at www.hely.com/schiphol and employees can then sign up easily using the Hely app. There are five central bicycle parking facilities where employees can pick up and drop off the bikes:

  • Schiphol Knooppunt Noord
  • Canadaweg bus stop
  • Knooppunt Oost bus stop
  • Southern Crossstraat bus stop (Technical Area East)
  • Zuideinde bus stop (Technical Area East)

A previous bikeshare pilot showed that employees like to use the bicycles for journeys on the Schiphol grounds, between the terminal, offices and car parks. The introduction of these Hely shared bikes is the next step towards a permanent bicycle sharing service at the airport.

More bicycle traffic
Schiphol is committed to encouraging commuting by bicycle; it’s beneficial to the health of employees and it’s a sustainable mode of transportation. We are working on creating good facilities and bike routes to the airport. These include a fast cycle route, bike parking with solar panels and a Bicycle Service Point. Furthermore, Schiphol encourages its staff to use bicycles by way of a bike plan and by compensating each kilometre cycled.
