"Debut author Holder explores a legacy of sexual violence in the Jim Crow South in this novel." – Kirkus Reviews.

Based on the terrifying historical backdrop of the 1930s in Indian Springs, Georgia, “Whites Only In America” by Artis Lee Holder unveils an evocative narrative that resonates powerfully with the current discussions around systemic racism and social justice.

It is a testament to the resilience of the human spirit and a shocking revelation of the depths to which humanity can sink into the clutches of prejudice and hatred.

This literary historical fiction book traces the story of a young Black couple, Josephine and Levi Blackburn, who are employed by a powerful white southern man, identified as ’old man Kyle.’ A chilling knock on their door one cold night sets into motion a series of events marked by abhorrent acts of sexual violence, stolen children, the treacherous legacy of a powerful white family, and an FBI sting operation spanning half a century.

Kirkus Reviews, a leading source of book recommendations, lauds the novel, saying the book is “An often powerful story of racism, trauma, and the search for justice.” The review also appreciates Holder’s poignant portrayal of the Blackburn family’s anguish paralleled against the sheer evil of the book’s antagonists, highlighting the systemic nature of White supremacist power in the pre-and post-Civil Rights Movement in the South.

Holder, who himself grew up in Indian Springs, gives the narrative a touch of personal experience and authenticity. He recollects witnessing “the horrible treatment of the elderly Black couple” during his time as an employee at a local business.

At just under 200 pages, “Whites Only In America” is not a lengthy novel. Still, it more than compensates with its gripping narrative, constant accumulation of mysteries, and heart-wrenching realities that hold the reader’s attention from the very first page to the last.

The novel emerges as a masterfully crafted testament to the experiences of Black men and women in the South and serves as a brutal reminder of a haunting past that continues to echo in today’s society.
