Cecilia Domeyko Delivers Heartbreak, Action, and Hope in Her Border Adventure Thriller “Sacrifice on the Border”

The U.S.-Mexico border is rife not only with a variety of hostile terrains, including deserts, deep valleys, and congested urban areas, but also with threats of violence and other crimes, of which women and children are the most vulnerable. These seem to serve as a premise for Cecilia Domeyko’s border adventure thriller “Sacrifice on the Border: A Mother Searches for Her Stolen Child” (BookBaby; 2022).

Domeyko’s “Sacrifice on the Border” has been making the rounds at different book events, one of which was the London Book Fair 2023, which was held last April 18-20, 2023, at Olympia London, London, UK. The book’s display was made possible by the self-publishing and book marketing company ReadersMagnet.

First published in Spanish under the title “Sacrificio en la Frontera,” “Sacrifice on the Border” revolves around not just border crossing, or migration in general, but also child trafficking, corruption and betrayal. The author, who is an award-winning journalist and filmmaker, delivers her story through a love and adventure story.

“Sacrifice on the Border” tells the story of Yoali, a young mother from Quesería, who loses her young son, Elisito, while crossing the Rio Grande River into the U.S. The child is stolen by his trafficker father, Guayo, who does not recognize the child as his own, and who plans to sell the boy on the black market. After recovering from her ordeal, Yoali embarks on a desperate search for Elisito on both sides of the border. She is joined by Frank, a policeman who is willing to risk his career to help her, and together they encounter danger and extreme violence, and must also face their inner demons in order to find each other

Readers are sure to feel their emotions run high as they digest Yoali’s story, and this will move them to feel connected to the plight of migrant families and victims of violence and crime who embark on the crossing into El Norte. “Sacrifice on the Border” is inspired by real-life events taking place on both sides of “la frontera.” While fiction, the story is based on Domeyko’s research into the plight of migrant families and talks about the issue of child trafficking on both sides of the border.

Says Domeyko: “My novel is the result of thirty years of interviewing hundreds of U.S. Latino immigrants who came here seeking a better life for themselves and their children. “Sacrifice on the Border” casts a bigger picture not just of border politics, but also of existing conditions around the border, a premise that truly redefines the identity of Yoali, Frank, and other characters in the story. Author’s Biography

Cecilia Domeyko was born in Chile and spent her childhood traveling to various parts of the world with her diplomat parents. She began her career as a foreign correspondent in Washington, DC writing for Latin American magazines and newspapers. She turned to filmmaking, producing documentaries about human rights, and the rights of women. Her work has aired in the US on PBS and Univision, and internationally on ABC Australia and Canal Plus. Her series of fiction programs for television aired on CNN-español in 18 Latin American countries and nationally in the US on Univision and Telemundo.

Her novel “Sacrifice on the Border” tells the story of Yoali, a woman whose toddler is stolen when she crosses the border into the U.S. While fiction, the story is based on Cecilia’s research into the plight of migrant families and talks about the issue of child trafficking on the border.

A love and adventure story rolled into one, the characters each tell their own version of events, moving the storyline forward to the heartrending finale.

The novel had its first launch in Miami, Florida at Altamira Books in October of 2017. A second launch took place at the Embassy of Chile in Washington, DC on November 14, 2019.
