SteelWave, a design-led commercial real estate company with a 40-year legacy of successfully acquiring, transforming, and developing creative office, life science, and industrial assets across the United States, is pleased to announce its clean-sheet revitalized Costa Mesa campus, ‘The Press,’ has earned the 2023 11th Annual Architizer A+A Award, honoring outstanding global architecture and spaces. The company was recognized as the ’Jury and Popular Choice Winner’ in the Commercial Renovations & Additions category.

This accolade highlights the remarkable reimagination of the existing 249,000 sq. ft. warehouse and 112,000 sq. ft. office building, situated on approximately 25-acres of land, into a one of a kind 640,000 sq. ft campus with an 1.5 acre park that makes a significant impact in the field of architecture.

The Architizer A+Awards are world renowned as the largest awards program focused on promoting and celebrating the year’s best architecture and spaces, “…championing those designers that are integral to bringing great buildings to life,” reaching the publication and network’s global audience of 400+ million in the process.

Located at 1400 Anduril in Costa Mesa, California, ‘The Press’ was once a newsroom, printing press and distribution facility for the Los Angeles Times. SteelWave assembled a strategic team, including Ehrlich Yanai Rhee Chaney (EYRC) with their exceptional architectural design expertise, along with SteelWave’s other development practitioners, to envision the property as a vibrant creative work campus, in doing so celebrating the history and character of the industrial space and surrounding community. Defining elements of the original structure such as the canopies and monolithic concrete walls, the steel frames, and the machine rooms, have nonetheless been retained, further reinforcing the idea of a historic ruin, reborn.

‘The Press’ design interventions embrace natural light and views, with numerous indoor- outdoor amenities intertwining naturally and serving as prominent components of the space. Loading docks and canopy-overhangs have become continuous back porches for collaboration and reflection. An open-air atrium brings dynamism to the central press line, while a skycut slices across the building to introduce daylight.

This latest accolade awarded to SteelWave was achieved on the heels of numerous Awards having been earned by ‘The Press,’ speaking to the lasting, innovative distinction of the campus, including the AIA California Design Award, the AIA Los Angeles Design Award, the AIA Orange County Design Award, AN’s Best of Design Award, the Editor’s Pick by the Chicago Athenaeum, the American Architecture Award, the Southern California Development Forum (SCDF) Design Award and the LA Business Council Architectural Award.

Barry DiRaimondo, Co-Founder, Chief Executive Officer (CEO) and Chairman of SteelWave, stated that, “We were privileged to accept this Award and extend our gratitude to the Team and Judging Panel at The Architizer in doing so. This is an accolade emblematic in our view, not only of the architectural and design distinction of ‘The Press’ in California, in the U.S. and on a global stage, but as a milestone in our four-decades strong legacy of anticipating future trends and creating work environments that are not only functionally robust, but foster collaboration and provide experiential atmosphere to a modernizing workforce. It’s this prowess and unwavering commitment to innovation which I’m proud to suggest has our Team at the vanguard of evolutions in the commercial real estate (CRE) industry.”
