Rod Zoske’s “A Wilderness Journey: Planes, Pack Strings and Perils” was exhibited at the 2023 Los Angeles Times Festival of Books, which was held last April 22-23, 2023, at the University of Southern California, Los Angeles.

Zoske’s “A Wilderness Journey” was displayed by self-publishing and book marketing ReadersMagnet. The company commits to helping authors such as Zoske share their works with the wider reading public at the L.A. Times Festival of Books and other events that attract a huge crowd of authors, book lovers, and publishing and book marketing professionals.

“A Wilderness Journey” follows the author’s seventeen-year-old self when he was working in the Selway Bitterroot Wilderness for two summers. His adventure started when he had the desire to get away from haying at the ranch since he was suffering from chronic hay fever. He had the need to work in the mountains so he could avoid contact with grass pollen.

The author refers to his experiences as the “Wilderness Journey” as he spent his boyhood in the Montana Wilderness. The memoir gives insights into how he learned to do some things that could be important in his adulthood. His job included cutting wood, watering the yards, keeping up the bunkhouses, maintaining the food commissary, preparing firefighter packs, and helping the packer when in the station. He also used to fish and play in the wilderness and get into trouble as he finds a way to grow as a person.

The readers are introduced into the wilderness through the eyes of the author. Zoske uses humor, excitement, and heartfelt relationships to keep the story engaging and relatable.

Author’s Biography

Rod Zoske spent his early years growing up in a small town in the southwest part of Montana. The town was nestled between two mountain ranges that offered lots of opportunity to explore. His friends and he had horses so their transportation into those rugged mountains was available. During these “outings,” either by choice or by chance, many skills were learned and being out in the forests was comfortable for the author. The idea of a 17-year-old boy wanting to work in one of the largest primitive areas in America became a reality.

Young and old can enjoy this story, and it is clean. There are a number of circumstances, dangerous, humorous and even heroic.
