Chris M. Arceneaux’s “The Epilepsy Shield Project: The First 120 Paintings: The Shield of an Epilepsy Warrior” was exhibited at the 2023 Los Angeles Times Festival of Books. The book festival ran from April 22-23, 2023, at the University of Southern California, Los Angeles, USA.

The display of “The Epilepsy Shield Project” at the country’s largest book event was made possible by the self-publishing and book marketing company ReadersMagnet. The company showcased several titles at the book festival, including Arceneaux’s book, as part of their mission – to share authors’ stories with the world.

“The Epilepsy Shield Project” is a health book that contains 120 paintings that spread awareness about epilepsy. It contains 10 series of 12 paintings that have different themes to let people be aware of the causes and effects of epilepsy.

Epilepsy is not just one condition it is a collection of over 150 “Seizures Disorders” neurological conditions which cause repetitive unprovoked seizures. There is no cure for epilepsy only treatments to help reduce “control” the seizures including anti-seizure medicines, brain surgeries, and implantable devices including the VNS, RNS and DBS.

The paintings come from the mind of the author, who underwent brain surgery in 2014 to remove a golf ball-size piece of his right temporal lobe (RTL) that caused him to have unprovoked seizures ” Epilepsy ”. This specific part of his brain had scar tissues formed as a lesion that caused when he hit his head while working in the total darkness so hard that he saw a flash of light. The surgery made him seizure-free while being able to take lower doses of anti-seizure medication. After the surgery, Arceneaux decided to become epilepsy advocate online with the use of his artistic ability.

The author completed the first 120 epilepsy-themed paintings in 2021 and collated them in to the book to help teach the public about the disorder and fight myths that have been around for centuries.
