DJ Blatchford’s Second Collection of Modern Native Alaskan Legends Exhibited at the London Book Fair 2023

DJ Blatchford is an Inupiat who has previously written poems and stories about life in Native Alaskan territories. Recently, she has come back with a second set of stories and even had it exhibited at the London Book Fair 2023. By doing so, she hopes to share with the world that there is more to her people than simply remembering the past.

London, UK – WEBWIRE

“In here are stories of how Alaska’s people go between generational paths to modern marine highways.”

The 2023 London Book Fair’s program featured a lot of speakers talking about increasing representation and diversity in the publishing space.

This made it all the more fitting for the fair’s exhibits that featured a number of books by people of color as well as writers representing the voices of indigenous peoples from around the world.

Among them is DJ Blatchford, an Inupiat poet and story writer who has eagerly published collections about Native Alaskan life in the modern day. Her second book, “Just Like That 2: Legends and Such – Alaskan Empowerment,” shares incredible stories meant to empower readers with spiritual and uplifting insights in the face of frequent challenges in life at the territorial lands. With the help of ReadersMagnet, a self-publishing and book marketing company, Blatchford got the book an exhibit spot at the book trade fair.

“Just Like That 2” contains a mix of poetry and personal accounts as well as stories of the past shared among her people today. Together, they paint a vivid picture of the Inupiat way of life from an older time, the difficulties of life in such periods, along with the indomitable spirit that led them to develop the means to survive.

Scattered across the stories are mentions of old tribal practices and beliefs, as well as the occasional encounter with supernatural urban legends. These are then set side by side with the way things have changed in the present day.

It is a book about empowering indigenous voices while also showing equal respect to the people of the past and their descendants of today.

“Just Like That 2: Legends and Such – Alaskan Empowerment” is still available online at Amazon, Barnes & Noble, and the ReadersMagnet Bookstore.
