“Those We Leave Behind” by John Scott Winters was exhibited at the 2023 Los Angeles Times Festival of Books, which was held last April 22-23, 2023, at the University of Southern California, Los Angeles.

ReadersMagnet, a self-publishing and book marketing company, showcased Thorpe’s Ransom Theft Love, along with several other titles, at the book festival, which is the largest of its kind in the country. The L.A. Times Festival of Books is attended by 150,000 people annually.

“Those We Leave Behind” follows the life of Harley Felts and his family, struggling to hold on to the past while dealing with the present. The story is set in the mid-south during the Depression era. When Harley’s wife, Ellie Felts, dies during childbirth, Harley is left with their children. He has to keep the family alive.

As the family is experiencing an agonizing recovery from the long period of grief and mourning, unexpected help from a stranger makes them discover that love can never be lost. Instead, it can only change form.

Love for the family is a strong bond that recollects itself even when the unit tends to lose a piece. Another piece of a puzzle may come to fill the empty space and would still make the bond as tight.

The author shares a heartbreaking and heartwarming story that resonates with the readers with a strong sense of caring and well-being, according to rave reviews it received. The readers can reflect on how the family stands up from the struggles that emotionally pulled them down. It provides inspiration that its readers can pick up as they follow Harley’s journey from page to page.

Author’s Biography

After studying literature and anthropology at Middle Tennessee State University, The University of Tennessee at Chattanooga, Nashville State University, and Ole Miss (under the John Grisham Chair), I have had short works published by Fine Lines and Turning Points, and after submitting a sample chapter as a stand-alone short story, from my first novel, “Those We Leave Behind”, to the Tennessee Writers Alliance, was named a finalist and was asked to read at their annual conference in Nashville. Chapter Two of the book also received First Honorable mention in the Florida State Writing Competition – Novel Chapter.

“Those We leave Behind” is my first novel and has been since edited and polished. In the meantime, I have written a third person closed, accelerated Bildungsroman (with more than a touch of Magical Realism) trilogy about a ten-year-old girl’s discovery of the amazing abilities that we all share deep inside.
