Dr. Basheer Ahmed’s Critical Look at American Gun Culture Exhibited at the 2023 L.A. Times Festival of Books

At the Los Angeles Times Festival of Books 2023, dozens of exhibits featured new publications on the most controversial subjects.

For professional psychiatrist Dr. Basheer Ahmed, that subject is gun violence. His book, “Why Are Americans Obsessed with Guns and Willing to Pay a High Price for Them?” is the result of his many years personally working with traumatized victims of gun violence and trying to understand the heart of the matter. With the help of Readers Magnet, a self-publishing and book marketing company, he arranged for the book’s exhibit spot at the L.A. Times Festival of Books in the hopes of raising awareness of this ever-present problem.

In the last two decades, the problem of school shootings appears to be a social affliction that is uniquely American. In “Why Are Americans Obsessed with Guns and Willing to Pay a High Price for Them?” Dr. Ahmed cites a large body of historical and statistical evidence that points to an unhealthy gun culture enabling tragedies like Columbine, Sandy Hook, and more.

This same culture is also backed by powerful political actors and their lobbyists, leading Ahmed to conclude that this culture is truly of epidemic proportions.

Of course, the book is not without its recommendations and solutions. Dr. Ahmed joins the voices of many gun safety advocates who want to expand public education efforts against America’s entrenched gun ownership culture. Aside from his work as a psychiatrist, Dr. Ahmed is also a prominent social activist who has campaigned against the prevalent violence towards minorities in the United States.

Dr Basheer Ahmed is a psychiatrist and a social activist. He enjoyed a long career as a professor, public speaker, and author of books and articles.

After retiring from private practice, Dr. Ahmed has devoted his time to social service activities and interfaith understanding. He founded three organizations: the Muslim Community Center for Human Services, providing health and social services to indigent residents of the Dallas-Fort Worth area, the Institute of Quranic Knowledge, and Intra-faith relations (IQRA for peace), an organization promoting intra-faith sectarian harmony, and the Institute of Medieval and Post-Medieval Studies (IMPMS), disseminating information about Muslim contributions to world civilization and inspiring young students to become scientists.

As a psychiatrist, he has seen firsthand the ghastly toll gun violence has taken physically and emotionally on patients as well as on the communities, which prompted him to write this book.
