Deonna Young’s “Designed for a Purpose” was exhibited at the 2023 Los Angeles Times Festival of Books. The book festival ran from April 22-23, 2023, at the University of Southern California, Los Angeles, USA.

“Designed for a Purpose” was displayed by the self-publishing and book marketing company ReadersMagnet at their booth for the pleasure of authors, book lovers, and other festival-goers. ReadersMagnet is committed to helping authors share their stories with the world in large book events, such as the L.A. Times Festival of Books.

“Designed for a Purpose” is a self-help book that talks about the life of a young girl with cerebral palsy. The book is autobiographical and follows Deonna as she grows up, dealing with cerebral palsy and the abuses she received from her mother,

Her mother was at a party when she was rushed into the hospital to give birth. The baby came earlier than expected, so her mother had to let her stay in the hospital for three more months to further develop and grow normally.

Deonna’s mother was a drunk and an addict. When Deonna was still a baby, her mother was found in their apartment, passed out from intoxication. While she was in this state, a baby was uncontrollably crying. Fortunately, a five-year-old girl was home. She took care of the baby by giving her an old bottle of milk. She then went to call her grandmother for help.

Their grandmother arrived at their apartment and took care of the children. She noticed that baby Deonna was not breathing normally. This alarmed her to pick up the baby and rush her to the emergency room where it was discovered that baby Deonna has cerebral palsy, a congenital disorder that affects the muscles, posture, and movement.

Both children were taken into their grandmother’s custody because their own mother cannot take care of them since she was still struggling with drug and alcohol addiction. However, she was still allowed to visit her children to still keep their relationship. One thing that scarred their relationship with their mother is that she only visited her children when the government sent a check that was supposed to support the kids. Their mother would collect the checks and then go back to drugs and alcohol.

Growing up, Deonna learned her ways to cope with cerebral palsy with the aid of physical therapy. She also tries to keep her relationship with their mother.
