“The Bible is a spiritual book, not a book about the physical part of life.”

Since as far back as the 1960s, the idea of professing spirituality over organized religion has been embraced by a number of religious writers. And at the L.A. Times Festival of Books, plenty of their publications shared the reasoning and insights in a new wave of published works.

And on the Christian side of this trend, one can find the book of Roger Akerley, who revives a radical belief in personal spirituality centered on the Bible.

His book, “The Sea of Glass: A clear understanding of the scriptures in spiritual terms: self-control, self-learning, and self-understanding,” is a sincere labor of love that presents a clear understanding of scripture that’s free from the bureaucratic and overcomplicated theology of mainstream churches.

Throughout the book, Akerley gives a straightforward take on well-known books in the Bible (from Genesis, Exodus, and Deuteronomy all the way to the four Gospels). The main spiritual concepts that he encourages for understanding these passages are self-control, self-learning, and self-understanding.

Akerley truly believes that God has revealed the meaning of the scriptures to him despite never having finished fifth grade and having to start working. For most of his life, the Bible was a book he had returned to read and he wishes to relay his teachings for the sake of humanity. The words he had written are relevant to anyone, regardless of what level of education they had attained.

“The Sea of Glass: A clear understanding of the scriptures in spiritual terms: self-control, self-learning, and self-understanding” by Roger Akerley got its exhibit spot at the L.A. Times Festival of Books with the help of ReadersMagnet, a book marketing and self-publishing company. The book is available on Amazon and Barnes & Noble.
