Will Theo succeed? Find out in Stephen Lloyd Auslender’s “The Streamlined Locomotive.”

Stephen Lloyd Auslender published the book “The Streamlined Locomotive.” The book revolves around Theopolis P. Bezelbottom, an indolent scion of a known and wealthy family of old-fashioned robber barons and leaders of industry.

Theo has always performed the duties of his position in the family enterprises by expending the least amount effort while maintaining his common-law wife, children, and girlfriends.

As a scion, he expects to inherit the main part of one of the major railroads of the country. He also wants to control the entire Hawgwaller County in Appalachia. He has high expectations and expects to achieve his goals with the least amount of work. Essentially, Theo, as he is called, wants to live an easygoing life.

However, the boss and patriarch of the family, Uncle Throckmorton P. Bezelbottom, now has higher expectations of Theo. With the United States edging closer to active participation in the second world war now raging in Europe and Asia he now expects Theo to take a more active role in preparing Hawgwaller for a profitable entry into the conflict. At the same time Theo’s Uncle Aloysius P. Bezelbottom expects him to come up with a streamlined steam engine for the two-bit third-rate feeder railroad that the county operates.

With all these responsibilities he is expected to accept, Theo knows that it is time for him to let go of his easy, comfortable position in the family. Theo needs to succeed in all the tasks he is expected to perform. If he does not deliver, he will lose his inheritance, wealth, and favored position in the family. Having developed few skills while doing very little in his previous work, he cannot afford to lose everything. Other than that, if he fails, he will be drafted into the Army as the United States is sure to get involved in this new war.
