Riveting Love-Story-Through-Letters by Hilda Oralia Parra Exhibited at the L.A. Times Festival of Books 2023
The Los Angeles Times Festival of Books 2023 exhibited a number of new publications that shared once-secret lives and uncovered truths that could challenge entire institutions. For Hilda Oralia Parra, that institution was the priesthood of the Catholic Church. Her book, “The Struggle for Love,” shares the secret relationship she had with a priest named Tomás via letters they exchanged through the years. The book was recently exhibited at the book festival.

Love stories certainly abounded in the book exhibits of the 2023 Los Angeles Times Festival of Books, with authors sharing romantic escapades both fictional and real.
However, the story that Hilda Oralia Parra shares is not only a real one, but it posed a real challenge to a major religious institution in her Texas community.
Her book is titled “The Struggle For Love: A Love Story Through Letters.” It was with the help of ReadersMagnet, a book marketing and self-publishing company, that she got an exhibit spot for her story at the L.A. Times Festival of Books.
In it, she shares a tumultuous yet ultimately triumphant story of her relationship with a Catholic priest named Tomás, whose initial friendship blossomed into something more. The book is mainly told in a series of letters that she and Tomás exchanged across the years.
The pair first met when Parra was only fifteen while Tomás was fresh out of the seminary and assigned to their parish in El Paso. At the time, Parra was also very active in her church community, and it became the starting point of their friendship.
Yet, in the next three years or so, their moments of playful flirting and regular contact seemed to be pointing at something more. And when it seemed that neither of them could finally deny what had grown between them, Tomás had to face the inevitable decision, the priesthood or Hilda.
