Freddie H. Gilyard’s “Just People” Was Displayed at the 2023 Los Angeles Times Festival of Books

Freddie H. Gilyard’s “Just People” was one of the books displayed by ReadersMagnet, a self-publishing and book marketing company, at the 2023 Los Angeles Times Festival of Books. The largest literary festival was held at the University of Southern California, Los Angeles, last April 22-23, 2023.

In 1619 Black people in Africa were sold into the American slave market. Black slavery continued and was strongest in 1840 when more Black people were brutally enslaved and worked for the growth of the economy. Through the Emancipation Proclamation by Abraham Lincoln in January 1865, “all persons held as slaves” were freed; hence, the start of post-slavery days.

The book features members of the Glover-Williams family as they talk about the impact of the circumstances that affected their lives after Black slavery in America. These circumstances are in the form of Christianity, slavery, behavior, and love.

Dr. Gilyard is the second of six daughters, and a graduate of Howard University, Trinity College, and The Fielding Institute. She is a 42-year retiree of public education, married, mother of four children and eight grandchildren. Her affiliations include Overcoming by Faith Ministries, Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc., Mandingo Socio-Civic Club, National Smart Set, King-Tisdell Cottage Foundation, Sol C. Johnson National Alumni, Association for the Study of African Life and History, and God’s Ambassadors. She is a Christian who loves the Lord and strives to live what she knows is ultimate.
