Vanessa Mayorga’s Eerie Sci-Adventure Will Be Displayed at Major Book Exhibits

Vanessa Mayorga is a budding sci-fi writer who just published her first ever thriller set in an eerily abandoned island. It’s a book that starts off with an already suspenseful premise that explores themes of lone survival and the horrors of invading hunters. The book will be displayed at a number of major book exhibits this year.

Vanessa Mayorga’s “Captive” has a premise that is both simple yet suspenseful.

What if you were the last woman on Earth?

Combining popular tropes and themes from science fiction, Mayorga sets out to answer this question from a very introspective first-person view. Her protagonist’s name is not specified at the beginning, only that she had lived over 30 years in an island devoid of other human habitants.

Nature reigned where she had lived. Its ecosystem was rich with all manner of exotic plants and animals. Yet despite this, she was merely surviving on the land and had done so for a very long time. The solitude and raw lack of civilization made her daily life restless.

Suddenly, for the first time, the denizens of man darken the island’s proverbial doorstep. In the woman’s first encounter, she sees them bring fire, smoke, and devastating power.

“Captive” is a very gripping read, and Mayorga’s words paint a very vivid picture of the woman’s experience at every turn. Every movement, sensation and sight is described as if one were in the protagonist’s body.

Readers are also given a deeper glimpse into the mind of a lonesome survivor, meaning it is far from a nature-hugger story. The island is described as lush but not necessarily benevolent, yielding only that which the woman could forage for herself. Throughout each chapter, she finds herself delving deeper into the secrets of both the island and the planet at large.

“Captive” is Vanessa Mayorga’s debut science fiction novel. It is partly influenced by her involvement with S.T.E.M. subjects before moving on to graduate with her own degree in English Literature at UCR. The book will be exhibited at a number of book fairs around the world. Curious readers can get a copy on Barnes & Noble and Amazon.
