Stephen Reger Gets His Supernatural Reimagining of the Thirty Years’ War Exhibited at the 2023 L.A. Times Festival of Books

Stephen Reger has taught European and American history for over 30 years. However, he always felt that much of the whole picture has been left out, so he has become a published author to finally let his real voice be heard. His debut novel, “Storm Front,” presents a more supernatural depiction of the Thirty Years’ War that devastated much of medieval Europe. The book was recently exhibited at the 2023 Los Angeles Times Festival of Books.

“Legend is often truer than history, and always more interesting.”

In the last decade, authors have turned their attention to historical fiction, reimagining famous battles and conquests through more a creative lens. The Los Angeles Times Festival of Books 2023 saw plenty of newly published books in the genre when it took place at the University of Southern California this year.

For Stephen Reger, however, historical fiction is more than just a passion project. His debut novel, “Storm Front: Book One of the Stormsong Trilogy,” represents an expression of a truth that the current field of history would rather suppress and conceal. With the help of self-publishing and book marketing company ReadersMagnet, his novel got its own exhibit during the L.A. Times Festival of Books 2023.

“Storm Front” is set in the Holy Roman Empire as the Protestant Reformation had just divided much of Europe along Catholic and Protestant lines. The story follows two women, one from either side. The first is Lady Atlantis Vanessa von Stormsong, the only child of a wealthy Catholic archduke. The second is Šarlatová, a Protestant thief who has lost her memory of her past.

Together, the two women are caught up in a vast conspiracy underpinning the truth behind Frederick I’s participation in the Third Crusade. There is a greater evil machinating the divisions that are plunging Europe into the fires of religious war.

Reger began writing this novel sometime after he retired from teaching American and European history. In his 30 years on the job, he felt that there was a lot that mainline academia deliberately leaves out, and his book serves to express his views.

“Storm Front: Book One of the Stormsong Trilogy” by Stephen A. Reger is available on the ReadersMagnet bookstore, Barnes & Noble, and Amazon.

Stephen A. Reger also has plans for a sequel, with updates posted on his website at https://www.stormsongtrilogy.com/.
