Those kids who rode in that short yellow bus should not have to be ashamed or embarrassed. And those people who tormented them should realize these children weren’t “retarded.”

Bruce Beryl Fisher’s “Taking the Short Bus: Teacher, I Need You” is a comedy/drama set in the city of Philadelphia between the years 1974-75 that follows the eighteen-year-old from losing his brother in the Vietnam War, being dyslexic, and anticipating his graduation from a school for special needs.

Eric needs to prove to the school admin and his psychologist, Dr. Goldman, that he is emotionally and academically capable of filing back into society so he could graduate. With this, he finds himself attending after-school jobs either at the movies as an usher or at local dances, spinning records for a popular disc jockey.

“Taking the Short Bus” earned a 3.5 IR Rating from Patrick McShane of IndieReader, saying the book is “poignant, nostalgic, engaging and atmospheric.”

According to McShane in his review, the book “calls on readers to consider how much special education, and indeed the entire education system, has changed and evolved in the nearly fifty years since the book’s time period.”

The book review also states that “the author makes it clear that he disapproves of many of the shifts and looks back positively to this era, but invites the reader to investigate their own opinion.”

“Bruce Beryl Fisher’s ‘Taking the Short Bus: Teacher, I Need You’ is a homage to a bygone era,” says McShane.
