“Ricardo and Dorothy lived all happy with zero responsibility. And then, responsibility came knocking on their door.”

Dozens of books enjoyed their time in the literary spotlight during the 2023 L.A. Times Festival of Books. Some of them came with a lot of surprises, whether it’s in the form of unconventional storytelling or unexpected plot twists. “Little Ricky” by Luis Zaensi is one of those books.

“Little Ricky” focuses on the devil-may-care duo of Dorothy and Ricardo. The two are grown adults who are still living out their teenage dream of dancing hard, partying hard, and being happily irresponsible.

Yet one morning, Ricardo gets the most unpleasant surprise of his life: Ricky.

According to a note, Ricky is his biological son, a fact that Ricardo heatedly disputes in their very first meeting. Despite this, little Ricky continues to be both a thorny yet somehow endearing presence in the couple’s lives.

The boy’s unfiltered commentary causes all sorts of incidents that fan the tensions between Ricardo and Dorothy’s families. Things were bad enough before, when the cultural differences between the two were already a cause for hostilities.

Still, it becomes evident that Ricky is still a kid with lots of heart. An unexpected twist to the story has had readers at the exhibit excitedly following it to the end.

The book is another wonderful reflection of Zaensi’s experience and how it colors his writing. A retired law enforcement officer, he has seen the all-too-real mix of good and bad in many people’s lives and believes that these are the tales worth telling.

“Little Ricky” by Luis Zaensi is available on both Amazon and Barnes & Noble.
