“A story about the joy of forgiveness, through the power of music and the healing of hearts.”

At the 2023 L.A. Times Festival of Books this year, visitors were able to check out dozens of young authors with debut novels across genres. However, it was also an excellent opportunity for those who have decided to start publishing even in their golden years. One such author is Doreen Hatton.

Around the age of 87, Hatton published her first novel “Then Sings My Soul.” It’s a very emotional novel about the Langstons, a family of talented musicians who mourn the sudden death of its loving father, Samuel.

Samuel was killed in a vehicular accident late one night. The novel opens with his funeral along with his distraught wife and daughters. The culprit is fifteen-year-old Aaron Turner, who was somehow driving with a learner’s permit yet no supervision that night.

Being a devout Christian family, the surviving Langstons are taught the importance of forgiveness and implore the court to give young Aaron a probation sentence with community service instead of sending the boy jail. The only exception is teenage Rose, who could not forgive the one who killed her father.

It is then later revealed that Aaron is also musically gifted, giving the family a chance to really connect with him. The rest of the novel tells a touching story about how the power of music brings healing to even the most traumatized and unforgiving of hearts.

Attendees to the L.A. Times Festival of Books had a wonderful opportunity to check out “Then Sings My Soul” by Doreen L. Hatton to see how their story ended. For those who want to read it, it is available on both Amazon and Barnes & Noble.
