“If Tom Clancy wrote a Western this is what is would read like. Good detail, as if he was alive in the late 1800’s, maybe he was! My wife loved it also.” – Designer/reader/traveler, Amazon Customer.

J. Michael Kirkland’s historical Western and cultural heritage fiction, “Equal and Alike,” is the first book in the “McBride” series and promises to be a riveting read for fans of historical fiction.

The book follows the journey of Joshua McBride, a young man who leaves his father’s farm in search of a better life in Independence, Missouri, during the mid-19th century.

Despite Chambers’ disapproval of his attraction to the tables, Joshua’s success in making substantial money in Portsmouth Square draws him deeper into a lifestyle he could never have imagined.

Mike can call himself a Native Californian. He was born in Taft, a small agricultural town near the center of the state. The family quickly moved after his father was discharged from the Air Force at the end of World War II. They settled in Monterrey Park, California, for a time. Ultimately, they moved to Temple City and then to Arcadia, both in California. He enjoyed sports and relished his classroom experience, always interested in creative writing. Michael graduated from California State College, Los Angeles, with a degree in accounting. He operated his own Certified Public Accounting Practice for more than 40 years.

His heart was in the annals of history, however, so he gathered family stories and stories of others over the decades as a hobby. Thirty years ago, Michael drafted his first book. The working “title” was Joshua. It seemed he never had time to complete the manuscript. Once he retired, he was compelled to complete the task. He enjoyed the process immensely. His first book, “Equal and Alike,” is very loosely fashioned after his great-grandfather’s experiences in California.
