Workers’ Memorial Day and Occupational Health and Safety Programs to Protect Puerto Rico’s Workforce

Puerto Rico, along with the rest of the United States, will observe Workers’ Memorial Day on April 28^th. The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) reports the annual day of recognition was established to recognize workers who died or suffered from exposures to hazards at work. The Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) says it is a time to honor those workers who have died on the job, to acknowledge the grievous suffering experienced by families and communities, and to recommit ourselves to the fight for safe and healthful workplaces for all workers.

“Across the country, thousands of deaths, and millions of occupational injuries and illnesses, occur each year,” said Harry Pena, President of Zimmetry Environmental. “In Puerto Rico, there were 19 fatal occupational injuries as recently as 2021, including 4 deaths that were due to exposure to harmful substances or environments according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics. The number of work-related injuries and illnesses on the islands is exponentially higher.”
