Deonna Young Shares Her Life and Struggles with Cerebral Palsy in “Designed for a Purpose”

Deonna Young tells her story as a young girl with cerebral palsy in her autobiographical self-help book, “Designed for a Purpose.”

The book opens on the night of a party when her mother was rushed to the hospital to give birth. The baby was born earlier than expected and had to stay in the hospital for three more months to further develop.

Her mother was a drunk and an addict. One day, she was found in their apartment, passed out from intoxication, while the baby was uncontrollably crying. It was a good thing that her older sister, who was five at the time, was there to try to give her an old baby bottle of milk. She then called her grandmother for help.

Their grandmother took care of the children and noticed that baby Deonna was not breathing normally. She quickly picked up the baby and rushed her to the ER, where it was discovered that she was diagnosed with cerebral palsy, a congenital disorder affecting the muscles, posture, and movement.

With their mother unable to care for them, both children were taken into their grandmother’s care. She was allowed to visit the children to still open up about their relationship, but she would only visit them whenever the government sent a check to support the kids. She would collect the checks from them and then go back to drugs and alcohol.

As Deonna was growing up, she learned ways to cope with her cerebral palsy with physical therapy and her relationship with their mother.
