Almost all published works of fiction promise to entertain readers with stories of distant galaxies, magical realms, or a sizzling reimagining of historical events. But for Rick Hocker, fiction is but a means to tell a more important story: faith and trust in God. His book, “Four in the Garden: A Spiritual Allegory about Trust,” is a new work of Christian allegory meant to demonstrate to fellow believers what it is like to really walk side by side with God in a genuine relationship.

Set in a spiritual fantasy setting, it starts with a Creator who makes a single human named Cherished. Yet unlike the original creation story in Genesis, the Creator decides to not make a second human to provide Cherished with company.

Instead, the Creator makes the radical decision to become the second companion.

Unfortunately, Cherished has little to no understanding of what that means. They struggle to trust the Creator in the midst of many disappointments and difficulties. To help, the Creator assigns three Teachers to show them the way.

The story is full of challenges for Cherished, with the biggest one promising to be a true test of their trust in the Creator. Yet in the end, the story teaches that life is a means of transformation based on holding on continuously to that trust.

The book came about three years after Hocker suffered a severe back injury that almost destroyed his life. It was only when looking back that he saw the tremendous growth he had, and he was inspired to express his thoughts in a spiritual allegory that could also enrich Christian readers.
