Hilda Oralia Parra’s non-fiction book, “The Struggle for Love: A Love Story Through Letters,” shows the exchange of letters between a priest of the Roman Catholic church and his young parishioner, exposing a life-changing, forbidden love story.

“The Struggle for Love” follows a young Hilda and a priest, Tomás, in a series of letter exchanges. Tomás was ordained as a Roman Catholic priest at the age of twenty-five and assigned to El Paso, Texas, where he met the young parishioner.

When Hilda ran for queen of St. Paul and won, rumors spread that she had won because of Tomás, when in actuality the contest had not been judged by him. Over the years their relationship flourished and eventually she became pregnant with his child, which made her realize she should leave El Paso to create space and decide what the next step would be. When she told Tomás that she in fact was pregnant with his child, Hilda left the city the following day. The letters that followed after she left were a testament to the struggles they faced while deciding what course their lives would take.

“The Struggle for Love” is a collection of letters from Tomás and Hilda as they go their separate ways after her revelation. These letters made them close to each other in every exchange, nurturing their love for one another. Still, they were in a dilemma: he’s a priest. He became a priest to convey love and the Word of God. But little did he know that the seminary was calling for him to his one true love. The letters also tell readers how Hilda and Tomas coped with challenges.
