Kathryn Coltrin, author of two children’s books Pirate Kids and Two by Two, added a third book to her publishing credentials, titled “Swimming in the Ocean.” The author holds an associate’s degree in early child development from Ozarks Technical Community College and a bachelor’s degree in child and family development from Missouri State University.

“Swimming in the Ocean” is the author’s most recently published work. It tells about different positive childhood experiences encountered by most people when they were children. Some of these childhood experiences include being able to share their feelings with family, enjoying participation in community traditions, and feeling supported by friends.

Kathryn states that childhood is a unique time to experience. Experts say that it is important to expose children to a wide variety of activities with friends and family. Not only do childhood experiences affect children’s sense of purpose but also influence the kind of purpose they are heading to.

Kathryn shares that children learn best through play. It is important that learning is fun during childhood. Parents and guardians have a role in making time and space available for children’s play. She shares ideas of environments where children can play, such as the park, meadow, or in their yard.

In “Swimming in the Ocean,” she uses the beach as an example of how children can play on the shore with their family and friends. Encouraging children to explore outdoor play is necessary for their development as it gives them the opportunity to use their whole body. Kathryn recommends that the book could be read aloud by parents and children to enjoy different sides of childhood.
