“I just finished reading your book. I loved every story, they all kept my interest. Your descriptive writing put me right there in the moment. You have been such a help to so many. Thank you for sharing these stories, they did my heart good and I am very impressed.” - Alma Hammond

Across the many exhibits at the upcoming L.A. Times Festival of Books, which will take place at the University of Southern California on April 22-23, 2023, publications on personal health are abundant. These range from miraculous recoveries from terminal illnesses to hard science journals talking about the latest breakthroughs.

Amidst it all will be a memoir by Dr. Bonnie Buchman, a certified naturalist who is also a retired RN. In her book “Witness to Healing,” Dr. Buchman shares her incredibly unique journey as someone who holds degrees in natural sciences, nursing, and naturopathy.

Buchman got her start as a naturalist working in the park district, thanks in part to her experience growing up with an herbalist for a grandfather. Her mother, on the other hand, when into practical nursing. These influences led Buchman to her first degree in biological sciences, which was then followed by her nursing degree just a few years later.

Throughout that time, her personal experience in numerous healthcare settings had a profound impact on her understanding of what it means to really heal. She has spent a good deal of time in hospitals, home nursing environments, and even parish nursing.

“Witness to Healing” is not only a mere retelling of her story but also that of other nurses, medical practitioners, and patients whom she had the privilege to encounter. Many of them give accounts that are equally profound and joyful yet also bittersweet. Dr. Buchman hopes that sharing these stories will give readers a more in-depth, more human understanding of how medicine is practiced across so many different settings. The book is actually the first in a planned series under the “Witness to Healing” title.

Visitors to the 2023 L.A. Times Festival of Books will find the memoir “Witness to Healing” by Dr. Bonnie Buchman displayed at the ReadersMagnet exhibit at booth #225. Get a copy on Amazon and Barnes & Noble.
