“Dad’s Journey: The One That Taught Us How to Love” by Jill A. Gilson is a memoir and mental and spiritual healing book that follows the life of Gilson’s father, Arnie Kustka, in a wheelchair. Becoming paraplegic due to an infection in the blood, he endured many challenges that pushed him to his physical, mental, and emotional limits. The Kustka family still relies on each other despite the life-changing situation. The author brings the readers to experience the laughter and tears shared by her father from a wheelchair.

Arnie was a family man who supplied humor and love to his family. His life journey was never easy as he was bound to a wheelchair after a blood infection. His family went through ups and downs, trying to cope with what happened. Through it all, his wife Shirley stayed with him by his side.

As a high school teacher, Jill A. Gilson uses writing as a way to cope with life’s challenges. When her father became a paraplegic, she began documenting and reflecting on these events. She didn’t know that soon she would be creating a non-fiction prose that follows her father’s life in his wheelchair. Her father was always there for her when needed, despite his disability.

“Dad’s Journey” depicts the love of a daughter for her father. It shows the different aspects of her father’s life in several events when he was there in laughter and pain until the signs of expiration manifested in front of the family.

Jill Gilson grew up in a small, rural part of Northeastern Wisconsin. She earned a degree in English and secondary education. As a high school English teacher, Jill has been in the classroom for over 30 years and still loves what she does. She wrote this book to show others who have dealt with tragedy that God has a plan for us all. She and her husband Tony live in Luxemburg, Wisconsin, and have three adult children.
