Ximena Dussan-Aya Pearson Tells an Autobiographical Story Through Haikus in Her Book “The Little Girl in the Red Boots”

Ximena Dussan-Aya Pearson’s book “The Little Girl in the Red Boots: A Birth Story” is an autobiographical story through haikus. It tells the birth story of the author as depicted with the use of haikus.

“The Little Girl in the Red Boots” is inspired by a pair of little red boots the author wore as a kid. She wanted to recreate those childhood moments through poetry, visual art, and paratexts. The author aims to marry art and psychology into a creative swirl of images and voices, as well as provide a piece of new knowledge in telling birth stories creatively. She uses an approach of interconnecting depth psychology and art through Jungian Arts-Based Research (JABR).

In the poetry book, Ximena mentioned that she was born with a clubfoot that limited her foot locomotion. This condition made her feel different than the other kids. Her haikus deal with topics from her birth to finding her way to her little red boots.

Her congenital condition is a challenge she has always tried to deal with as she was growing up. So, she took note of some of the most important points in her life and made a haiku for each of them. She explored through creativity and used her voice in writing to express what she truly felt.

The poetry book was illustrated by Josefina Aya, who merged her art with creative writing.

Author’s Biography

Ximena is an artist, a mother, a wife, a daughter, an immigrant from Colombia, SA, and a naturalized US citizen. She earned her BA in Child Psychology from George Washington University and an MA in Engaged Humanities & the Creative Life with emphasis in Depth Psychology from Pacifica Graduate Institute. She is currently pursuing MA/PhD in Jungian & Archetypal studies with emphasis in Depth Psychology at Pacifica Graduate Institute.

She enjoys exercising, traveling, reading, watching movies, live theater, meditating, writing poetry, and stories. She currently lives in Los Angeles, CA with my husband, son, stepdaughters, our cat Magnus and dog Maggie.
