“…the modern look and feel of the cosmos was writ in the fabric of its earliest moments and carried relentlessly through time and space.” - Neil DeGrasse Tyson

The Los Angeles Times Festival of Books 2023 will host plenty of dedicated exhibits for every genre of literature, including science fiction. Fairgoers should check out a sci-fi novel by one author that focuses on a literal world-shaping premise.

The author’s name is David W. Stewart. His book, “Angel of Mortality,” spins ideas on nanotechnology, artificial intelligence, and robotics into a sci-fi adventure that reshapes the planet.

“Angel of Mortality” starts with Dr. Raisa Ilyushkin, a young and ambitious chief scientist who invents a new groundbreaking technology: The S.A.N.G. – Short for Serial A.I. Nanobot Generator, the device can produce fantastic living machines. Dubbed Xenoborgs, these machines eventually grow to the size of entire continents and have pushed the limits of what is scientifically possible. From creating artificial microorganisms to intelligent weapons, these new machines hold both miraculous and apocalyptic potential.

Unfortunately, an apocalypse is exactly what the head of a global crime syndicate has in mind. Around the beginning of the novel, Raisa’s invention is plagiarized, putting her in a race against time to prevent a horrific scheme to wipe out most of the Earth’s population. Meanwhile, the Xenoborgs begin developing peculiar personalities, promising a more uncertain future with the power only ever restrained by their programming.

The science in the novel combines many exciting ideas from Stewart’s extensive career as a lead engineer on multiple space programs (from Atlas/Mercury, Gemini/Titan, Saturn/Apollo to the Space Shuttle and ISS). The book also touches plenty on the ethics and implications often faced by such emerging technologies. For fans of futurism, it’s a new work that shares many takes on these issues.

“Angel of Mortality” by David Witherington Stewart will be displayed by self-publishing and book marketing company ReadersMagnet at their exhibit at booth #225 at the 2023 L.A. Times Festival of Books. The festival will take place at the University of Southern California, Los Angeles, on April 22-23, 2023. Purchase a copy on Amazon, Barnes & Noble, and the ReadersMagnet online bookstore.

Author Bio
David Witherington Stewart is a Florida-based author. He graduated in 1959 from the University of Florida with a BS in Physics. During the period 1957-1995, he was lead engineer, supervisor and manager for the Atlas, Titan, Apollo, and Space Shuttle. From 1995 to 2009, he owned L & D Consulting, a company that specialized in grants and proposals. He started writing in 1995, while his wife had cancer and he was her caregiver. He took his first course from Writers’ Digest School in 1998, and won first place for non-fiction from the Space Coast Writers’ Guild in 2000. In 2001, he began taking novel writing courses from Humber College, and started Psychic Redemption in 2003. He published “Psychic Redemption” in 2009, quickly followed by “Within the Wind” in 2010. Both books featured Bonnie McConnell as protagonist. He then wrote “Serious Consequences,” a follow-on from “Within the Wind,” and “Cabrera Landing,” a fantasy. After that, he spent several years putting together his memoir, “Seeking Success.” “Seeking Success” has been widely read on academia, because it gives a worms-eye view of the US Space Program. Returning to novel writing in 2014, he started three novels in parallel: “Unseen Dragons,” “The Reiss Conspiracies,” and “Julie’s Story.” “The Reiss Conspiracies” morphed into ““Angel of Mortality”.” He has begun working on “Julie’s Story,” which is literary fiction, and expected to be ready for editing in November.
