“This book is eloquently written as a piece of this family’s history. Interwoven with the author’s tremendous affection for 60s & 70s lyrics that allow the readers to relate to the love story within.”

James M. Hawk’s book “My Dear Mabel: A Grandson’s Lessons in Love, Faith, Patriotism and Courage in Letters from World War I” will be displayed by self-publishing and book marketing company ReadersMagnet at the Los Angeles Times Festival of Books. This amazing event, which is the largest literary festival in the country, will take place on April 22-23, 2023, at the University of Southern California, Los Angeles.

The L.A. Times Festival of Books is a yearly outdoor event that takes place in the heart of California and is attended by roughly 150,000 fairgoers. This year, ReadersMagnet will be joining the festival for the third time. To entice fairgoers to visit its exhibit, the company will expand its booth, offer more fun activities, and showcase a greater selection of book titles for fairgoers to browse through.

“My Dear Mabel” is an epistolary novel that tells the beautiful love story of the author’s grandparents, Roy Hawk and Mabel Thornton, in which their love and loyalty for each other will be tested during a perilous era.

Roy and Mabel met in East Tennessee two months before the United States declared war on Germany. A wholesome campaign of letter writing followed. In 1918, Roy went to the Western Front as an Army private, and Mabel went to Washington, D.C. as a “war worker” in the War Department. Their grandson, the author, discovered their letters―hundreds of letters―after his father’s death in 2018. He understood the letters recorded much more than family history.

The book contains their letters during The Great War. The level of courtesy and strange formality in these century-old letters will definitely leave a great impression on the reader. These letters record a very old-fashioned courtship, a young man’s preparation and departure to war, and the loyal and courageous support of a young woman who learns more and more―through the written word―about the heart of her soldier far away.

Author Bio

James M. Hawk is the son of James T. Hawk, the second son of Roy and Mabel Thornton Hawk of Cleveland, Tennessee. James attended law school and practiced law in Washington State. As a Navy brat, James grew up near saltwater ports, including Pearl Harbor, Hawaii, San Francisco, and Seattle. In the Bicentennial Year, Captain Hawk received his orders to head to Naples, Italy. As a 1970s song lyrics connoisseur, James finished high school in Naples in 1979. He was in high school when disco music was at its zenith, when Lionel Richie was working for The Commodores, and when the Rumours album was released to a thankful world.

Before returning to Washington State with a retired Captain Hawk in 1980, James spent his first year of college in Munich, Germany (München mag dich!) and one more summer in Southern Italy (Dolce far niente!). In December 2023, James self-published Advice To Sons, which is a collection of some of the wisdom and “Advice” from letters written by his grandfather, Roy Hawk, and his dad. James is grateful for the wisdom of his grandparents and his dad, including the wisdom to save the letters written between Roy and Mabel over a century ago. James lives in Washington State with his wife and three sons.
