“Natalia Salinas M.S.W., L.C.S.W: Shares Her Recovery from Mental Illness Story with Insights” doubles as an inspirational autobiography and religion and spirituality book by Natalia Salinas, a successful licensed clinical social worker. The book talks about her mental disorder, her struggles, and her way to recovery.

The author shares her struggles from her diagnosis to her struggles to her eventual recovery. Salinas was diagnosed with Dissociative Identity Disorder (DID), formerly known as Multiple Personality Disorder (MPD) or Split Personality. Patients suffering from this mental illness tend to switch to alternate identities, causing them to have episodes of forgetfulness or amnesia of the time when another identity or personality takes over.

The mental illness is a result of a trauma that causes an alternate identity to develop, letting the well-being of the original personality stay protected from the situation. The illness is mostly accompanied by a change in behavior, memory, and way of thinking. People with this case may also be depressed, dependent, and passive.

Natalia Salinas uses her voice to teach and inspire her readers about the struggles of having the disorder and how she coped with it. She aims to provide inspiration and awareness about mental illness to kill the stigma around it and uplift those who are trying to free themselves of the illness.

Despite her various suicide attempts, Salinas remains loveable, resilience, and strong as she learns to maintain her mental wellness. She’s still grateful to be alive. The author shares her way to recovery through psychotherapy and a good support group. She wants to inform her readers that it is never too late.

Born in Mexico and raised in McFarland, California, Natalia Salinas grew up in a community that became more widely known after Disney produced a movie “McFarland, USA” about their cross-country team. However, during her childhood, the town wasn’t even on the map. In the early 1980s, her community organized and fought against a cancer cluster that plagued their town. Her parents were community organizers and she admired them for this. She had an exciting childhood with people from all over the United States coming to McFarland to visit and organize against injustices during the summers. However, while she enjoyed her childhood, she also struggled with serious mental illness.

When she was 14 years old, she attempted suicide for the second time by jumping off the McFarland walking bridge. However, she was not accepting of medication or therapy for her mental illness until she was in her early 40s. She does NOT recommend this. Becoming accepting of her mental illness was part of her journey. She is now a successful Licensed Clinical Social Worker with specific training in addictions. She has a variety of training and more than 15 years of experience, but ultimately, she believes that she is better able to help her clients because of her past experiences. Giving back to the community of people with mental illness and those with loved ones who may have mental illness brings her joy.
