A story about one man’s courage amid the realities of war

Marsha Samoylenko Denison, author of “My Name Is Buttons: This Is My Story,” published a biography of her father titled “Grisha’s Loop - My Slavic Saga: From the Bolshevik Revolution to America a Story of Courage and Survival.”

The author was inspired to write a biography of her father Gregory John Samoylenko’s belongings, which included documents that he brought from Russia to America and his unfinished autobiography “My Slavic Saga.” After conversations with family members that drove her to ponder her father’s legacy, she decided to share Gregory’s story.

“Grisha’s Loop - My Slavic Saga” revolves around the industrial revolution, which gained a foothold in Russia much later than in Western Europe and the United States. Around the turn of the 20th century, it brought immense social and political changes.

Gregoire, or, Gregory was a young man growing up in Imperial Russia. He was an ethnic Russian-Ukranian growing up in southern Russia, a Muslim-dominated region. He was an orphan raised by an extended family. He witnessed the Bolshevik Revolution and participated in the Russian Civil War. He spent his younger years participating in the Russian Revolution as a member of the Tsar’s army. In the advancement of his duty to his country, he abandoned his plans to continue his education at Petrograd University to pursue a peripatetic journey through Russia and around the Black Sea. All around him, he witnessed the horrific scenes of war.
