Christian Author Joann Slead’s Cuddly Animal Storybook Will Be Displayed at the 2023 L.A. Times Festival of Books
Joann Slead is both a devout Christian and a budding children’s book author who wants to use her talent to teach youngsters about Jesus. Her new book, “The Secret Life of Bears,” takes many of Jesus’s stories and lessons and retells them through the Christ figure represented by the most loving Papa Bear ever.

Joann Slead wants to share stories of Jesus with young children. But in today’s world, even an industry as innocent-looking as children’s books can be full of competition. Fortunately, Slead has set her sights on the 2023 Los Angeles Times Festival of Books, where her children’s book “The Secret Life of Bears” will be displayed. The event will take place on April 22-23, 2023, at the University of Southern California, Los Angeles.
Rather than go the usual route of retelling Bible stories, Slead has opted to change things up and have Jesus represented by a lovable Papa Bear in her stories.
In “The Secret Life of Bears,” she focuses on using the style of animal storytelling to show kids what a loving relationship with Jesus really looks like. Slead has put lots of effort into using all the well-known animal storytelling devices to teach kids about her faith.
The book is also written in a way that actively engages readers and encourages them to make the right choices in applying the lesson in her book.
Slead has always had a strong connection with children when it comes to telling stories and using them to teach kids about Jesus. This book is the first in a major project where she aims to take this talent and reach an even bigger audience of young Christians who have yet to fully understand who their Lord and Savior is.
