Boston, Mass – WEBWIRE

At present in the U.S. there are 5.6m bereaved youth (1 in 13) who have experienced the death of a parent or sibling by age 18

empowerHER was formed in 2013 with the original mission— to empower, support and connect girls and young women who have experienced the loss of their mothers. As of 2023, empowerHER has expanded to include all children of any parent loss.

There are various ways to support empowerHER, LUMINARIA is their largest fundraising event. It raises critical operating funds for the organization and spreads awareness to families that will benefit from our life-changing programs. 100% of funds raised ensure that the empowerHER programs remain at NO COST to the family.

empowerHER is a supportive and inclusive community that offers EVENTS for CHILDREN and a one-on-one MENTOR PROGRAM. Events remind children they are not alone in their grief and mentorship provides year-round support from positive role models who can relate to the loss of their parent.

At present in the U.S. there are 5.6m bereaved youth (1 in 13) who have experienced the death of a parent or sibling by age 18, that is 5.6 million bereaved US children and teens of parent/sibling loss. That number more than doubles to 13.9 million when you increase the age to 25.* Research shows that individuals bereaved during youth are at increased risk for diverse psychological and behavioral health problems, including elevated rates of anxiety, depression, and substance abuse.

There are some great child bereavement resources in the U.S. and empowerHER® is one of them. LUMINARIA plays a vital role in raising awareness among the families who will gain from our programs’ life-altering impact.
