It’s not just healthcare centers that can be a high-risk environment for MRSA or other staph infections, anywhere with crowding or where skin-to-skin contact takes place, like in schools or places people engage in sports, may put people at elevated risk.

Staphylococcus aureus is a type of bacteria that has long been recognized as a cause of disease. Frequently referred to as staph, it is commonly found on the skin and hair, as well as in the nose and throat of people and animals. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) even reports that about 30% of people carry Staphylococcus aureus in their nose.

Most of the time, staph does not cause harm to healthy individuals. However, sometimes it can cause infections ranging from minor skin infections to serious infections that can be fatal in some circumstances. This can be especially true in healthcare environments where patients may have a weakened immune system or have undergone medical procedures that make them more susceptible to infections.

These infections can be caused by different types of Staphylococcus aureus, including some that are resistant to certain antibiotics. Various types include:

  • Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA)
  • Methicillin-susceptible Staphylococcus aureus (MSSA)
  • Vancomycin-intermediate Staphylococcus aureus (VISA)
  • Vancomycin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (VRSA)

“These infections may include bacteremia or sepsis, pneumonia, endocarditis and osteomyelitis according to the CDC,” said Harry Pena, President of Zimmetry Environmental. “It’s not just healthcare centers that can be a high-risk environment for MRSA or other staph infections, anywhere with crowding or where skin-to-skin contact takes place, like in schools or places people engage in sports, may put people at elevated risk.”

Helping to stop the spread of pathogens in Puerto Rico and across the Caribbean are the infection control and building science professionals at Zimmetry Environmental. They offer surface and environmental testing to identify infectious agents to help prevent new infections, to pinpoint the source of an outbreak if one has already occurred, and to confirm the effectiveness of cleaning and disinfection procedures in the built environment. Zimmetry also recently sponsored an educational video about Staphylococcus aureus exposure risks that can be seen at: https://youtu.be/-3esH6Ws44c
