“Love can never be lost, it can only change form.”

Taking place at the University of Southern California, Los Angeles on April 22-23, 2023, the L.A. Times Festival of Books 2023 will be a great opportunity for authors to finally showcase work that they had been refining for years. John Scott Winters is one such author, and his book, “Those We Leave Behind,” is an exceptional work in America’s niche genre of Southern Literature.

“Those We Leave Behind” is set in the Mid-South at the toughest times during the Great Depression. It follows the family of Harley Felts just after the devastating loss of his wife Ellie.

Ellie was considered the family’s heart, as the hard times made an even harder man out of Harley and some of his children. Her death has begun a long and dramatic period of mourning as the entire family struggles to right itself. The younger kids have little to no guidance on how to process their grief while the older ones feel a bigger weight on their shoulders. All the while Harl must face the impossible task of filling in the large hole his wife had left in their lives.

It’s a tale with a very grim start followed by very painful developments. However, the light at the end of the tunnel comes in the form of an expected stranger, whose arrival finally marked the start of healing and closure for the family.

The book shares a lot of Winters’ background in both literature and anthropology as he vividly describes the bleak atmosphere of the Depression-era Mid-South. “Those We Leave Behind” will be displayed at the ReadersMagnet exhibit at booth #225 during the L.A. Times Festival of Books 2023. Get a copy on Amazon.
