“This is a great lesson for kids about how being different can provide opportunities that others may not have. I can’t wait to read more about Gumper and Oink’s adventures!” – Marie Eisbrenner

The 2023 L.A. Times Festival of Books – which will take place on April 22-23, 2023, at the University of Southern California, Los Angeles – is expected to host countless exhibits of all-new children’s books, each one filled with colorful illustrations and timely lessons to match. For Cherie Okonski, this is a wonderful opportunity to showcase her talent for both in her book “The Secret of Gumper the Rabbit.

Gumper, the Rabbit, was born different from his siblings. Gumper and his best friend Oink, the Guinea Pig, will soon learn how being different can save the day.

Cherie Okonski is a professional portrait artist who made her reputation in Southern California painting black and white portraits of famous movie and sports celebrities.

On the side, Cherie blended her artistic talents with childhood imagination into a children’s book. She has published her first book, in a series of adventures called “The Secret of Gumper the Rabbit.” The character Gumper was created to make a difference in people’s lives.

In this story, readers learn about how Gumper is different from his siblings and about Gumper’s best friend, Oink. One day, trouble breaks out in the pet store. Oink thinks of a plan to use Gumper’s difference to help ward off trouble and save the day. In doing so, Gumper learns a secret that is then passed down to bunnies everywhere by their mothers.

It’s a sweet yet simple story that teaches children how being different can be a wonderful gift. Just like Gumper, everyone has unique gifts and talents.

Okonski sincerely hopes readers will look forward to future adventures with Gumper and Oink and the difference they can make in the lives they touch. The proceeds of “The Secret of Gumper the Rabit” go to support children and their families impacted with congenital heart issues at Helen DeVos Children’s Hospital, Grand Rapids, Michigan.

Readers of Cherie Okonski’s “The Secret of Gumper the Rabbit” praise its beautiful blend of cute illustrations and the sweet message of accepting other people’s differences. Her book will be displayed at the ReadersMagnet exhibit at booth #225 at the Los Angeles Times Festival of Books. Copies are available on Amazon and Barnes & Noble.
