New PaaS Research Study By Compliance & Risks Announced

A strategic focus on ESG helping promote a sustainable, circular economy is the highlight of this most recent study examining solutions to critical raw materials shortages. Compliance & Risks announces its partnership with EU Commission funded Project Scandere. This partnership is focused on analyzing the potential of product-as-a-service (PaaS) models to better execute and promote a sustainable, circular economy.

What Product-as-a-Service (PaaS) Can Do for the Circular Economy

The EU’s overall strategy, new EU laws and policies, monitoring of their implementation and management the EU budget are all guided by the EU Commission. EU product regulations and manufacturing standards tend to lead the way in global regulations.

At the heart of European policies is eco-innovation which aims to reduce impacts on the environment and transition towards achieving the objectives of the European Green Deal.

Product-as-a-service (PaaS) is an innovative business model in which a company provides a product to a customer without selling it outright. Instead the use of the product is paid for by the customer over a period of time. This not only allows the company to retain ownership of the product but often results in a more sustainable and eco-friendly approach to consumption.

By keeping products in use for longer periods of time, PaaS can play an important role in promoting a circular economy, reducing the need for new resources and limiting waste. Through facilitating customers to use a product without owning it, the product can be reused multiple times by different customers, instead of being discarded after a single use.

Project Scandere & the EU Commission

Launched by Linkoping University, Project Scandere is a research project involving industry and academic thought leaders to raise awareness of and accelerate the adoption of PaaS models to increase the efficiency and sustainability of the circular economy and by doing so provide greater value to consumers, supply chains and the environment.

Compliance & Risks, headquartered in Cork, is joining the consortium to conduct this research and develop best practices for implementing PaaS models.

The research study will specifically involve surveying a selected list of European Electronic, Electrical, and Electromechanical manufacturing companies to ascertain their experience with the feasibility and practicality of regulations with PaaS in the EU member states.

Project Scandere aims to transform entire CRM value chains into more resource-efficient and circular systems for the EU’s interests. The major objective of the project is to create demonstrators with improved product designs, leaner remanufacturing, optimized recycling and adapted regulations in the context of a CRM-efficient PaaS business model from the sustainability perspective, through industry and academia collaboration across the EU.
