They then came to seek a new future in British India, and there they started their own family and became parents of a daughter and a son.
However, the peaceful life of the Selzer family was changed when the family was arrested in 1940 by the British as “enemy aliens” and interned for almost six years in British internment camps near Bombay. Fortunately, the family’s release was granted in 1946 in Lahore, where Hazel and her brother Michael were educated in Lahore’s convents and boarding schools in Kashmir, India, and England.
Her readers are the beneficiaries of the author’s willingness to reflect on struggles that many people might rather avoid than face. Author Hazel Selzer Kahan was born in Lahore in 1939 after her parents fled from Germany and Italy. Hazel and her family spent the years between 1940 and 1946 in British internment camps in India. In 1947, Lahore, the author’s cherished home, became part of Pakistan. She lived in Australia and Israel before coming to the United States and pursuing a market research career in New York. She now lives among the woods and vineyards of the North Fork of Long Island where she is a writer, the creator of leafages art, and hosts of two monthly radio interview programs on WPKN radio.
