Hazel Selzer Kahan Shares Heart-Wrenching Story of Growing Up Jewish in Pakistan in Memoir “A House in Lahore”

A memoir that describes the dilemmas of growing up Jewish in internment during the post-British Raj Muslim Pakistan era

San Diego, California – WEBWIRE

“Because my special empathy with Hazel Kahan’s narrative comes from also being interned during WWII, growing up neither European nor Asian in China, and revisiting my Asian roots much later in life, I find the account of her return to Lahore enchanting. Despite the book’s title, the reader will decide whether Pakistan was ever truly her “home”. What a story!” – Tom Scovel, author of The Year

Hazel Selzer Kahan’s “A House in Lahore: Growing Up Jewish in Pakistan” was displayed by self-publishing and book marketing company ReadersMagnet at the 2023 LibLearnX: The Library Learning Experience last January 27-30, 2023, at the New Orleans N. Morial Convention Center, New Orleans, Louisiana.

“A House in Lahore: Growing Up Jewish in Pakistan” shares the experiences of two twenty-seven-year-old Jewish physicians who fled from Germany in 1933 and Italy in 1937 after Mussolini joined the Berlin-Rome Axis. They then came to seek a new future in British India, and there they started their own family and became parents of a daughter and a son.

However, the peaceful life of the Selzer family was changed when the family was arrested in 1940 by the British as “enemy aliens” and interned for almost six years in British internment camps near Bombay. Fortunately, the family’s release was granted in 1946 in Lahore, where Hazel and her brother Michael were educated in Lahore’s convents and boarding schools in Kashmir, India, and England.

Her readers are the beneficiaries of the author’s willingness to reflect on struggles that many people might rather avoid than face. This book will also make readers realize how international persecution and internment shape personal and familial lives and how false preconceptions and stereotypes can be.
