Bruce Beryl Fisher’s Vivid 70s Historical Drama Exhibited at LibLearnX 2023

Education was the central focus of this year’s LibLearnX: The Library Learning Experience, and that included works that criticize the state of American education today. One such example is Bruce Beryl Fisher’s “Taking the Short Bus: Teacher, I Need You,” a story about a special needs boy who must beat the system to finally be free to graduate.

“I am not a fan of historical fiction of any kind, but I find this story compelling.” – Online Book Club Review

True to its name, this year’s LibLearnX was centered on improving education by sharing new ideas. This also included ideas that are critical of today’s American education system, such as those of author Bruce Beryl Fisher, who authored the book “Taking the Short Bus: Teacher, I Need You.

Last year, Fisher published “Taking the Short Bus.” The book focuses on Eric Blum, an 18-year-old attending Noah Webster Preparatory, which is a school for special needs children. Blum’s learning difficulties come from both his dyslexia and the emotional trauma of losing his brother in the Vietnam War. He also faces another emotional challenge in the form of his feelings for his history teacher, Carol Schor.

Using elements of coming-of-age drama and comedy, Fisher presents Eric’s story as an intense, personal commentary on America’s current public school system (particularly with its treatment of special needs children). The young man is set up against the scrutiny of the school’s resident psychologist, as well as uncaring public school authorities who would sooner see Eric set back a grade and far away from a college education.

The book makes further allusions to what Fisher thinks are real obstacles still existing in the American public school system (such as problems with standardized testing, the chasing of scores, and misallocation of funds).

Whether or not Eric beats the system he’s up against or becomes another unfortunate victim, LibLearnX attendees were able to see by checking out the book at its exhibit. Either way, Bruce Fisher has written it with a strong message about American education, and he doesn’t mince words.

“Taking the Short Bus: Teacher, I Need You” by Bruce Beryl Fisher is now available on Barnes & Noble and Amazon.
